2.6 - Leadership Emerges from Problem-Solving

The manufacturing floor or cell leaders’ goals, expectations, and incentives

There is no greater learning than experiential learning, and the greatest form of experiential learning is problem-solving. The greatest joy comes from the success that is achieved. This creates a desire to repeat the problem-solving success.

To create real change, people need to continue to solve problems together. If we do this once we’ve made an improvement, but we still have players, not coaches. If we do this three times, coaches start to emerge. If you do this four times, other coaches emerge. If you do this problem-solving as a team as part of your business practice, the coaches emerge with others under their wing. And only by doing this can you change your culture.

This is different from coming to work to repeat the same old thing for no other purpose than to produce. In other words, we have made coaches who are constantly trying to put together a winning game plan. They are always looking for new ways to win.

Leadership emerges from problem-solving.
