2.3 - The Manufacturing Supervisor's Goals

The manufacturing floor or cell leaders’ goals, expectations, and incentives

The manufacturing supervisor must want to make his operators succeed. The manufacturing supervisor must be able to explain what the operator needs to do. If the operator does not understand what needs to be done, they cannot follow through to complete the tasks.

The supervisor must:

  • Be willing to invest their time in the operator

  • Know the operator’s target goals

  • Understand how the operator completes their tasks

  • Remain calm and solve problems when they occur

  • Teach the operator to be self-aware

  • Teach the operator to solve their problems

  • Teach the operator to use the managing daily improvement process

  • Guide the operator to prioritize and solve causes of downtime and defects

  • Teach the operator the use of continuous improvement tools.

The manufacturing supervisor is measured on their operators’ performance. Each operator should increase their production by 2% per month. The supervisor is responsible for all his operators meeting this increase per month.
